Otwarte kontenery platformy nie posiadają ścian bocznych ani czołowych i to odróżnia je od kontenera standardowego. Ich konstrukcja jest stalowa – bardzo wytrzymała, o dużej nośności, dzięki czemu jest to stabilne podłoże dla ciężkich towarów. Powierzchnia platformy otwartej odpowiada wymiarom standardowych kontenerów. Aby umieścić naprawdę duży ładunek, można postawić kilka platform otwartych obok siebie. Można na nich transportować towary nadwymiarowe i bardzo ciężkie – np. traktory, maszyny XXL, a nawet części do samolotów.
